Who are Bhujel People?
The Bhujel people are an indigenous Tibeto-Burman tribe whose ancestral homeland is connected to the Bhuji River (Bhuji Khola) and the hills of Dhorpatan in Baglung District, Nepal. Until the 14th century, the Bhujel community maintained their own principality, with a culture deeply rooted in the land through language, folklore, music, and traditions. Historical invasions led to the loss of their kingdom, forcing many to disperse. Today, the Bhujel diaspora extends across Nepal, India (Sikkim and the northeast), Bhutan, the USA, Canada, and Australia. Although migration has challenged the preservation of their unique identity, Bhujels continue to celebrate and safeguard their heritage, traditions, and community bonds, ensuring their cultural legacy endures globally. Migration and Diaspora
The Bhujel diaspora tells a compelling story of migration, adaptability, and resilience. Originating from their ancestral homeland in Bhuji River, in western Nepal, Bhujel communities have historically expanded into neighboring areas of India, including Sikkim and Darjeeling, and Bhutan. More recently, due to political and economic factors, a global diaspora has emerged. Bhujel people have courageously resettled in countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and the UK, forming new communities while striving to preserve their unique language and cultural heritage. This widespread migration highlights their remarkable journey from a small Himalayan community to a global presence.
